ENAC Research Day 2018

In the framework of the ENAC Research Day 2018, which took place on June 14th, Giuseppe Peronato, doctoral assistant at the Laboratory of Integrated Performance in Design (EPFL-LIPID) of the Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne, presented the intermediary results of his doctoral thesis.

Supervised by Prof. Marilyne Andersen and Emmanuel Rey within the ACTIVE INTERFACES interdisciplinary research project, supported by the National Research Programme NRP 70 “Energy turnaround” of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), this doctoral research aims at developing a tool for mapping the energy potential of existing buildings in urban areas under uncertain environmental conditions. The method is based on the hourly energy production of building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) modules and on the energy demand of buildings. These indicators are calculated for multiple modeling scenarios (e.g. for radiation and vegetation), which give the confidence bounds of the simulated energy potential.

An interactive 3D map indicates the priority level of energy refurbishments and/or PV installations in buildings at different spatial aggregation scales (e.g. building surface, building, urban block). The tool provides decision-makers with a ranking of the different spatial locations according to their need for building energy refurbishment.

The “research exhibition” of the ENAC Research Day 2018 was the occasion for Giuseppe Peronato to provide information on the functionalities of the mapping tool, exchange with the visitors and answer their questions.
